Relevant, valuable and innovative. Those were the key words that UK & Ireland SAP User Group (UKISUG) wanted to be represented in their new brand.

Following an internal marketing review, the group decided it was time to refresh their corporate branding. The previous logo had been in operation for over 20 years with just a few minor amends over that time. Following a successful tender, mm&d were appointed to design and implement the new branding across various channels.

Choosing to redesign a logo is a big step for any school or college. Often there is sentimental attachment to the logo; it may have been designed by a student or is significant to another key moment in the schools history.

With the change in how people use media, it is crucial that the logo works across all mediums, particularly in digital format. Understandably, When many school logos were designed this wasn’t taken into consideration and the logo can look dated and pixelated.

The design team at Teesside-based M Media & Design (mm&d) are highly experienced in developing school brands. A rebrand can often be a frightening prospect to a school, but the knowledge mm&d have in the industry means we can make sure the process is smooth and straightforward.

With a new logo comes the need for new stationary, template documents, prospectus’ and signage. These are all areas which mm&d can support schools with.

When St Bede’s Primary Academy became part of the Nicholas Postgate Academy Trust in 2015 they saw this as a perfect opportunity to look at refreshing the school logo. The school were looking for a modern design which would look great across a range of channels, including uniforms and the school website. Anna Coulson, Executive Headteacher, St Bede’s  Primary Catholic Voluntary Academy:

The support we had from mm&d was fantastic. They took on board the feedback from our whole school community and created a modern take on the previous brand.

The last school Ofsted inspection judged us as outstanding and we feel we have a brand to match the continued success of the school”

Contact us today to see how we can support your school.

Following an internal marketing review, the group decided it was time to refresh their corporate branding. The previous logo had been in operation for over 20 years with just a few minor amends over that time.

Following a successful tender, mm&d were appointed to design and implement the new branding across various channels.

One of the key early tasks for the project was to meet staff, directors and members at one of the regular events that UKISUG host. This was a great opportunity to learn more about the business and get an insight, particularly from members, to how the brand is perceived. We used short surveys, delivered in a casual one-to-one setting to pull in vital information which we would then feed in to our design team.

From the feedback, it was fairly universal that the previous brand needed to be refreshed. We also asked participants what they looked for in a brand, what they like and what stands out. This varies from industry to industry so it was important to consider this as the members are a key target audience for UKISUG.

Gavin Hatton, Design Director, mm&d:

Following feedback from the members, prominent phrases that needed to be represented included ‘modern’, ‘voice for users’ and ‘communication’. We used the speech bubble in the logo to represent the communication aspect and this feeds through all branding.

The new brand was launched at the UKISUG Annual Conference at The ICC, Birmingham in November.

The feedback we have had from UKISUG has been great. The new brand was phased in following a lengthy communications audit and we look forward to working with UKISUG moving forward.

Branding and logo design continues to play a big part in the work we carry out at M Media & Design. There are many reasons companies choose to rebrand. Maybe their positioning has changed, and they are now offering different services to when they first started.

In our ten years of business, the way businesses use their logo has changed dramatically. With the increased use of digital media, it is important that companies have a brand that stands out online. A dated logo may not represent your company values and leave you behind your competitors.

Over time we have created an eight-step process to delivering a new brand:

1. Meeting with the client

When we first start working with a company on a branding project we like to meet the client in person. We feel this is a crucial stage where we learn more about the business and the project brief whilst also being a great opportunity for both parties to ask any questions. We have a series of questions we start each project with which can be completed online or at the initial meeting.

2. Research

Once we have met, we will then carry out comprehensive research on the business, the industry they are involved in and who the client’s competitors are. Establishing the target audience is key when undertaking any branding project.

3. Consult

It is important that we consult a wide range of groups including directors, staff, clients and others involved in the industry. Learning more about what the client’s customers look for in a brand is important as they decide how the business is perceived. There are a number of ways we do this including focus groups, one-to-one meetings and online surveys.

4. Sketch

Once we have greater knowledge in what is needed for the project, our Design Director will discuss the brief with our design team. We will sketch through some ideas, deciding what will work well and what could be developed further.

5. Three concepts

Following the sketching process, we would begin designing the artwork. We generally supply three concepts to the client, but if our creative team feel there are other versions that would suit the project we may supply more.

6. Present

Once the concepts are complete we would arrange a time to come in and meet with your team. We will present our concepts along with examples of how the branding will work on a range of mediums, including print and digital.

7. Revisions based on feedback

Following the branding presentation, there may need to be changes or adaptions to the artwork presented. This is often a slight colour change or the use of a different font. We would return the amended versions via email for sign off.

 8. Deliver

Once the chosen artwork is signed off we would send over multiple file versions for use. Depending on the client, we often provide brand guidelines which allow you to educate your partners on how your new logo should be used.

To celebrate our tenth anniversary, M Media & Design (mm&d) put on a unique treasure hunt in Hartlepool. The prize for winning the competition was £500 with another £500 donated to local Charity the Hartlepool & District Hospice.

Starting on Monday 16th November, we posted a series of video clues leading to the secret destination. It was local student Jordan Thornhill who put his detective skills to the test and managed to find the prize which was hidden in Ward Jackson Park.

Jordan, studying for a Masters in Public Relations at Teesside University took an early interest in the campaign.

I followed the campaign from the first day, trying to piece together the clues. I had a feeling the prize was in the Park and with the help of my uncle we spent a few hours trying to find the envelope.

It’s a great time to win money with Christmas coming up!”

Greg Hildreth, Corporate Events & Social Media Manager at the Hartlepool & District Hospice was thankful for the support provided by mm&d:

This is a very generous way for mm&d to celebrate their 10th anniversary and we are absolutely delighted with such a kind donation, which will now be used to fund the care services we provide free of charge to our patients and their families. I’d like to say a huge thank you on behalf of everyone here at the Hospice.”

Mark Skirving, Director at mm&d was delighted with how the campaign spread across the town:

We are pleased with how the campaign went- there has been lots of interaction on social media with over 20,000 people viewing the campaign and it really captured the imagination of the local community. We thought it would be a great way to celebrate our tenth anniversary with the town.”

Based at The Innovation Centre, mm&d have a diverse range of clients, coming from many different sectors. Specialising in website and graphic design, the agency have clients from all corners of the globe.

Whilst we are enjoy working with clients in exotic locations, we are particularly proud of the companies we work with on our doorstep. We take great satisfaction in helping them grow.”

You can look back on the campaign, including the video clues on our YouTube channel.

Thanks to all the people who participated!

As part of our ongoing tenth anniversary celebrations, M Media & Design (mm&d) are set to stage a special Treasure Hunt in Hartlepool.

Starting on Monday 16th November and finishing on Friday 20th, mm&d will be giving away daily clues to a secret location in Hartlepool, where one successful treasure hunter will win £500 in cash. The company will also match the prize with a £500 donation to the Hartlepool & District Hospice.

Jamie Arthur, Hartlepool resident, and Director of mm&d:

We were looking to find a unique way of celebrating our tenth year. We wanted it to be fun and also engage the local community- and what better way to do this than giving someone an early Christmas present!

We were also keen to support a local charity, and the Hartlepool & District Hospice fit the bill perfectly. They do great work in the town and rely heavily on fundraising so we were more than happy to make a contribution to such a fantastic cause.

To be in with a chance of winning the £500, follow M Media & Design on social media, and stay tuned for daily video clues on Facebook and Twitter which will lead you to the mystery location. Videos will be posted at 10am each day.

Social media is a great way of promoting specific campaigns to a targeted area. We are looking to engage with a large volume of people in Hartlepool and generate a lot of excitement around the event, said Jamie.

M Media & Design provide marketing support for many businesses in Hartlepool, including JDR Cable Systems, Changing Futures, Manor Academy, Hartlepool Sixth Form and Focus Removals.

Formed in 2005, M Media & Design (mm&d) are celebrating this month having being in business for ten years.

Directors Gavin Hatton and Mark Skirving formed the company after gaining experience working for Teesside-based agencies.  Mark Skirving, Director;

What started with two computers and a printer in a back bedroom has grown into a team of ten employees and clients from all corners of the world.

Whilst it seems like the past ten years have flown by, the changes in the industry have been huge. Keeping up with the constant advances in technology has been a challenge but the fact we are still in business shows we have adapted well.

By coincidence, Property Webmasters, now part of the mm&d Group, were also formed in 2005, by current mm&d Director Jamie Arthur. Property Webmasters specialise in working in the real estate industry, building estate agency websites and property portals for clients far and wide. Property Webmasters and mm&d joined forces in 2010 and work closely alongside one another as a full-service marketing agency. Jamie Arthur, Director;

We recognised that there were a lot of symmetry between the two businesses. Bringing together a wider range of experience and expertise has allowed us to offer more services to our clients which has boosted both arms of the business.

The agency has won several awards over the past ten years, including the Creative Business of the Year at the 2015 Hartlepool Business Awards.

We feel we have a very personal approach to the way we work with clients and feel any success we have enjoyed has been off the back of this.

Along with the focus on the property industry, the agency also works with many clients from the engineering sector. Gavin Hatton, Director;

Being based in the North East, naturally there is a good fit with engineering companies.

We are incredibly thankful to all of our clients, many of which we have worked with for the best part of a decade. We want to be considered as one of the leading agencies in the region and have big plans for the next 12 months to grow even further.

As well as hosting a party for family, friends and clients, the mm&d team will also be taking part in 10 different challenges over the next 10 months to find their own office decathlon champion!

To coincide with the ten year milestone, mm&d will also be launching a new website to showcase their work.
